Don't give up on 'lazy' employees

Are your employees lazy? Chances are they don’t really want to be. Most employees would rather be engaged than bored all day, and they’ll welcome any opportunity to get more stimulation out of their time at work. You can turn them around by following some basic motivational strategies:

·        Talk to them. Let bored employees know you’ve observed their lack of interest at work—or that you sense they’re capable of doing more. Often you can make a difference in their motivation just by letting employees know you’re paying attention to them.

·        Reinforce improvement. Praise and rewards can drive the kind of behavior you’re looking for. You don’t have to go overboard; just let employees know you value their efforts. Rewards can be inexpensive—an extra vacation day, for example—as long as employees understand how they relate to their efforts, and to your organization’s objectives.

·        Appeal to their interests. Find out what each employee really wants from his or her job—and life. When you know what drives them, you can do a better job of providing training and delegating assignments that they’ll be enthusiastic about.

·        Look outside the workplace. Sometimes personal problems can distract an otherwise productive employee and affect his or her performance negatively. You don’t want to probe into deeply personal matters, but consider directing employees to the appropriate resources, or offering them some time off to deal with personal issues.

·        Expand their jobs. Employees frequently grow bored because they’re not doing or learning anything new. Look for different assignments to give them. Delegate more authority and responsibility. When they get out of their day-to-day routine, they may become more energized and committed to their work.

All the success!
